After working in the public school system for nearly a decade, I can tell you first hand the great need for fathers in the lives of children. Nothing has more impact in a child's life than a consistent, positive relationship with their father.
So where are the fathers? I'm not sure. But maybe a better question to ask is where are the husbands?
Men, I suspect that if we as husbands were being the men that we were created to be, more if not all of us would still be around to be the fathers we need to be. If we had the courage to lead, protect, and provide for our wives perhaps our children would also have better fathers. If we had the courage to put our wives needs before our own, make our brides feel loved, cherished and beautiful, our children would indirectly benefit.
The issues with our nation boil down to men not being what we were created and called to be. Although we need all of the great fathers we can get, perhaps our focus should be on becoming excellent husbands first.
