Balancing Act

I was fortunate enough to attend the Thunder vs Grizzlies playoff game last week.  It was a great game even though the Thunder lost. :(

The half-time entertainment was 2 guys called Duo Design.  They are 2 buff dudes that balance on each other in incredible ways.  You may have seen something like it in a Vegas show or on America's Got Talent.  Basically, these guys are so strong that they can balance on each other with one hand in the craziest positions.

I've been hearing a lot about balance lately from a few different areas of my life.  Balance keeps coming up at work, at church, at conferences I've attended recently, and in the books and blogs that I read.  The thing about balance is that everyone knows that you need it but not everyone knows how to achieve it.  This is because balance looks differently for different people with different jobs and different personalities and different families.  What works for me might not work for you and vice versa.

I'd like to think I have control and my life is in perfect harmony and balance but that would be a lie.  I strive for balance but have yet to consistently achieve it.  I'm not sure why it is so difficult but it is.  It's hard to balance being a husband, father, son, principal, friend, christian, church member, etc... There aren't enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do in each one of those areas.

Since I haven't figured it out yet, I don't have 3 tips on how to achieve balance in your life.  But due to my trial and error I can tell you 3 things that balance is not.

1.  Balance is NOT equal.  You can't just say, 1/3 family, 1/3 work, 1/3 leisure...Boom!  Balanced!  It doesn't work that way because equality of time doesn't equal balance.  If you "balanced" your day like this you would most likely be fired.

2.  Balance is NOT permanent.  Chances are if you achieve balance this month, you may become unbalanced next month due to the natural seasons of life.  My wife and I have super crazy schedules in May and August because we are both in education.  It would be silly to think that balance in May and August looks like the same balance as July an October.

3.  Balance is NOT a destination.  Balance is not something you achieve like a degree.  Once you get it you don't get to keep it.  It is something that you pursue and strive for throughout life.  You constantly have to reevaluate your life, add great things and subtract not so great things.

Like the guys in Duo Design, balance must take a lot of practice.  It must take working together really well and communicating really well with your balancing partner.  It must take give and take.  It must take knowing your role.  It must take patience.  It must take discipline and determination.  Sometimes I look at people that appear to have their lives balanced and I look at them with the same way I look at these crazy guys from Duo Design and think "Wow!  That is impressive!"

Is your life balanced?  How do you know?  What do you do to fix it?  What do you do to keep it there?
