Diaper Rash Remedies

Facebook is a powerful tool!  Sure you can waste a lot of time playing games, creeping on people, or arguing with someone's friend that you don't know about something that doesn't really matter. (guilty of each and am now in remission)  But facebook can also be a powerful tool to help you in times of need.

For example, yesterday Katy and I woke up to find out our son Beau had a diaper rash.  Talk about out of nowhere!  So of course I did what any parent would do, I googled "Diaper Rash Remedies".  I found a ton of information, so much that I didn't know where to start.  So I decided to ask the masses on Facebook.  The great thing about asking questions like this on Facebook is you get real answers that have actually worked for people you know.  Answers on Google are probably good but you never know if they are being promoted.

So I asked, What are your diaper rash remedies? I was blown away as around 40 people responded with a remedy that worked for them!  Impressive!!

Here is what worked for us;

  1. Air Dry - We went diaper-less a bunch, even overnight.  WARNING! This is an "accident" waiting to happen!  Have carpet cleaner, towels, antibacterial spray, etc on hand.  When he was wearing a diaper we changed it at the first sign of wetness.
  2. No Wipes - We used wet and dry paper towels, patting clean and dry instead of wiping or rubbing.
  3. Oatmeal & Baking Soda Baths - I heard about both so we just combined them together for a soothing bath.  For his real bath we added a little of the baking soda.
  4. Calmoseptine Skin Ointment - Katy's sister Kristy bought us some and dropped it by the house.  We think it worked wonders!  She got it at a local drug store but allegedly they have it behind the counter at Walgreens & CVS.
So we decided to attack this diaper rash and use as many of the remedies that we could.  Part of me wishes we would have used a more scientific approach to see what helped the most but the other part of me is glad we got rid of the rash quick!  Who knew facebook cures diaper rash!?!

Here is the facebook post with 20 plus tried and true diaper rash remedies from real people.  Thank you again to everyone that shared your advice and for using facebook in a positive way!  Social Networking at it finest!!

  • Katie Massinger West I second the baking soda bath and air dry-let him be naked for awhile if you can(play outside or on hard floors in case he pees). There's also stuff called calendula you can get at whole foods(make sure to get the ointment, not the gel or cream) and I put a thick layer on at each diaper change and within a day I can tell a huge difference. I also found that disposable diapers gave my kids rashes so we use cloth diapers now(if you're up for an adventure). Good luck!
